A Film By Kannan Arunasalam
Republic of Amnesia follows the story of a lost film and a rising group of the 'Aragalaya', the youth-led protest movement that forced out the authoritarian president. Colombo, the capital of the island nation, is today a place of mourning and a site for memory. Sri Lanka has witnessed political upheavals, systemic corruption, and a cycle of debt. But in the midst of it all, there is a society that refuses to forget.
As the ‘Aragalaya’ represents a massive movement against injustice, this film asks: can democracy survive when memory is under threat? The struggle for democracy is not only in institutions but in the stories a society chooses to tell itself.
